Influence of computer messages on users' attitude and decision making

(in English) People are likely to receive the proposal or request of desirable others. We examined whether the same thing holds true when they interact with computers. A total of 122 university students played an interactive game with a computer. During the game, participants received positive (flattering) or negative (criticizing) computer messages about their performance or did not receive any messages. The computer that gave negative messages was evaluated less friendly than the other computers. However, the type of messages did not change the user’s acceptance rate of the computer’s proposal and request. The results suggest that the contents of computer messages can affect users' feeling but that this effect may not be strong enough to change their behavior.
