Iterative optimization for max-min quantum error correction

(in English) This paper considers the max-min quantum error correction problem;
both the encoding and decoding channels are to be designed to maximize the fidelity between input and output states of a given noisy channel, while the minimum is taken over all possible pure input states. In general, this kind of max-min optimization problem is non-convex and is thus very hard to solve even with the aid of high-quality computational tools. Nevertheless, it is shown that, when the input is taken from a qubit and when the encoding (the decoding) process is fixed, the problem reduces to exactly convex and the optimal decoder (the optimal encoder) can be obtained. This result is crucial in the sense that it allows us to try iterating the encoder and decoder optimization procedures to compute a suboptimal solution of the original max-min QEC problem.
