Evaluation of Maximal-Ratio-Combining Algorithm for single-polarization QPSK format with Elliptic polarization

(in English) Single Polarization high-speed optical transmission is important for bidirectional free-space optical communication system in order to have enough isolation up-link and down-link because signal discrimination is possible by using orthogonal polarization states. Recent advance in digital coherent technology employing multi-level QPSK format is enabling such high-speed transmission with high receiver sensitivity. Polarization re-combining using polarization diversity receiver is widely used to do polarization aligning between signal and local, because the signal polarization state in the fiber in the receiver easily change by system vibration or shocks. However, in order to re-combine each polarization signals by digital signal processing, there is a possibility of system instability depending on the algorithm especially when signal polarization becomes 45-degree-azimuth elliptic one. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm of maximal ratio-combining. By adding split-ratio dependent phase correction coefficient, system showed stable re-combining against all input polarization states.
