A study on improving accuracy of application identification for encrypted traffic

(in English) In network management, application identification of traffic is important. However, encrypted traffic has been increasing due to be raised secure communication in recent years. Especially, VPN interconnection system is generally utilized and has been increasing. In the VPN network, accurate identification is becoming difficult by using methods proposed so far, because it is so hard to infer the original (unencrypted) packets from encrypted packets. Our research group has purposed the methods in order to improve the accuracy of application identification even if a large portion of the traffic is encrypted. In this paper, we show that the identification accuracy of application for the encrypted traffic can be improved. Experimental results show that these methods improve identification accuracy even if many application type and variety of environments. Moreover, we use two data-mining approaches, that are Naive Bayes classifier with kernel estimation and C4.5 decision tree, and compared to these methods.
