A Consideration on 2D DOA Estimation Using Non-Searching EM and SAGE Algorithms with Hexagonal Antenna Array

(in English) It is important to understand the radio wave propagation structures in mobile or wireless communications. One of useful methods for the purpose is high-resolution DOA estimation using an array antenna. Recently, DOA estimation using EM algorithm based on the maximum-likelihood (ML) approach receives much attention. It is because the EM algorithm remains stable in scenarios involving coherent signals and low SNR. However, the ML approach generally has the high computational complexity caused by optimization of the likelihood function. As is often the case with 2D DOA estimation, increased estimation parameters require too much computation time. In this paper, we apply 2D ESPRIT to the EM and SAGE algorithms for the reduction of computation time in 2D DOA estimation with a uniform hexagonal antenna array. Through computer simulation, we show that the proposed non-searching methods provide improved performance in terms of computation time and estimation accuracy.
