Two-Layer Coding of HDR Images by Using a Bilateral Filter

(in English) A two-layer coding of HDR images is presented. The tone mapping is implemented by a sequence of bilateral filtering and global tone mapping. The smoothed output of the bilateral filter forms the basic component, and another detail component is formed by the difference between the HDR input and the smoothed output. A global tone mapping is applied to the smoothed output to obtain the basic component of the corresponding LDR. It is added to the detail component to give the LDR image, which is the primary layer in the proposed coding. The supplemental layer is defined by a difference between the HDR input and the HDR output of the inverse tone mapping of the LDR primary layer. The experimental results show that SNR increases by 10dB in HDR images.
