[Encouragement Talk] Effectiveness Evaluation of Rapid Retransmission Control Mechanism in Low-Latency Networks

(in English) Recently, a rapid data retransmission control method in layer 2, named R2D2 (Rapid and Reliable Data Delivery), has been proposed to prevent the performance degradation of applications caused by TCP's congestion collapse in high-bandwidth low-latency networks like in data center. R2D2 performs the data retransmission by using shorter time-out value than one of TCP, and introduces a simple mechanism by treating all of data flows from a source node as a single flow. We focus on the applicability of R2D2 as an efficient data transport technology in data centers, and so have evaluated its basic performance. In this paper, we further evaluate the performance of R2D2 by simulations in terms of the variety of output queue length of the bottleneck switch and the retransmission time-out value, and validate its effectiveness. From the evaluation results, we confirmed that the retransmission time-out value of R2D2 has an impact on throughput while R2D2 is effective in terms of the fairness for TCP.
