Optokinetic responses in humans: Dependence on spatial frequency of sinusoidal gratings

(in English) Optokinetic responses (OKRs) are reflexive eye movements elicited by moving visual patterns. Several studies have shown that the slow-phase velocity of the OKR in primates in response to steps in stimulus velocity was composed of two components, a rapid rise followed by a slower rise to a steady state. This study was undertaken to understand the visual response characteristics of these two components of human OKRs, which in turn reveals how the OKRs function in our daily life. We recorded the human OKRs to drifting vertical sinusoidal gratings of different spatial frequencies, and studied with particular focus on spatial-frequency dependence during initial open-loop period and that during sustained period following initial rise in eye velocity. The eye movements during the open-loop and sustained periods showed different dependence on spatial frequency of the motion stimuli, suggesting a difference in visual response characteristics of the neural structures underlying two components of the OKRs.
