Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) is one of the principal space techniques for geodesy, navigation, a nd Earth science. A regional SLR network coordinated by an organization called the Western Pacific Laser Tracking Network (WPLTN), formed initially by member country namely, Australia, China, Japan and Russia in 1994. Which joined a regional body of the International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS). Saudi Arabia, India, and Korea have joined as well.
WPLTN has expanding 18 sites operational now, gathering significant % of global data, 13 new sites in development in 5 nations, in Eurasia and around the Indian Ocean.
WPLTN has not only strong geographical advantages for monitoring tectonics through long baselines, but also common view tracking of satellite including GNSS, especially to cover regional GNSS constellation such as QZS, Compass, and IRNSS. Intercontinental applications such as time transfer , laser communication links, new lunar ranging and space debris application program is going on. |
