OBSERVATION OF INDONESIAN RAINFALL VARIABILITY USING TRMM SATELLITE DATA

(in English) The rainfall characteristics in Indonesia is important to understand climate system in the word because Indonesian archipelago is characterize as a huge amount of rainfall throughout the year and plays the essential role as a center of atmospheric heat source of earth climate system. Monthly rainfall measured by the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3B43 13 years was employed to investigate for the Indonesian rainfall and satellite method. Monthly means, total means, maximum and minimum variability, standard deviation and the trends analysis were used to determine Indonesian rainfall variability. The results show the effect oceans, island, monsoon, and topographic are clearly the spatial patterns of rainfall. Most parts of Indonesia have a peak of high rainfall events during DJF (December-January-February) season and the valley of low rainfall events occurred during JJA (June-July-August) season. Those conditions are associated and generated with the northwest and southeast monsoon patterns. High fluctuation between the maximum with the minimum monthly rainfall occurs on Jawa Island, Jawa Sea and South Part of Sulawesi Island. In these area, fluctuations of rainfall reach above 400 mm/month. High annual rainfall typically occurs on the island areas except southeast part of Indonesia. The trend analysis shows that in Kalimantan, Jawa, some parts of Sumatra and Papua the rainfall have a tendency to increase. On the other hand, downward trend in rainfall occurs along the west and south coast of the Sumatra, eastern part of Jawa, south part of Sulawesi, Maluku Islands, western part of Papua, and Bali Island.
