An Approach to Estimating Illumination from Objects with Unknown Surface Re

(in English) In the field of mixed reality, attention is being focused on methods to display computer graphics (CG) objects in actual scenes as if the objects really existed. However, the shades and colors of the displayed objects often look unnatural. To solve this problem, it is necessary to estimate the illumination of the scenes and apply it to the objects. This would make it possible to synthesize CG objects into actual scenes in a way that would make the objects look real and natural. With current methods, however, it is necessary to put special objects whose surface reflectance is known into the scene and thus these methods cannot applied in many instances. With the aim of creating a widely applicable method, in this paper we report a method we propose for estimating illumination from objects whose surface reflectance is unknown. We also show experiment results and discuss the method's effectiveness and problems remaining to be addressed.
