| (in English) | The steady increase in the number of foreign residents in Japan year by year has led to a foreign resident population of over two million, 1.7% of the total population. Many of these people face difficulty in their daily lives due to the insufficient Japanese competence. A particular difficulty is understanding daily TV and radio news, and we are researching ways to providing the pre-intermediate-level Japanese speakers with the news in easy Japanese. In this paper, we report our experiments of reading comprehension test administrated to foreign students (most of them were Chinese speakers) of the Japanese language to verify the effects of easy Japanese news. The results revealed that easy Japanese helped all levels of students understand the detailed information in the news. We discussed the effects in terms of the relationship between the Chinese speakers’ ability to understand Kanji and the characteristics of easy Japanese for news. | |
