This study investigated whether evaluations of the quality of care provided by nurses declined when nurses were depicted wearing a mask. Several incumbent nurses uttered the same phrases, but with different thoughts and feelings, either patient-oriented or self-oriented, with or without a mask. They were simultaneously videotaped via a prompter, and the videos were presented to hospitalized patients under one of three viewing conditions: face-only, voice-only, or face and voice. The patients were asked to rate the extent to which they wanted to receive the care that was depicted. The results show that a treatment was viewed as less desirable when the nurse was wearing a mask during patient-oriented communication. However, videos of patient-oriented communication were evaluated significantly more positively than were those of self-oriented communication, even when the nurse was wearing a mask. This pattern of results was consistent across the viewing conditions. |
