Application of an EBG Structure to 3.5GHz Antenna for Power Absorption Reduction in Human Head

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Much attention has been paid to the human safety against electromagnetic (EM) wave exposure from mobile handsets, because they are used in close proximity of the human head. Safety guidelines for EM wave exposures have been established by international standardization bodies. The present study investigates the performance of a dipole antenna above an electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) substrate to realize a low specific absorption rate (SAR) antenna. The frequency band considered is 3.5 GHz, which will be assigned for 4th generation mobile communications. One of the motivations for this proposal is that the size of the EBG substrate become small and thus can be small enough for handset terminals. The dipole antenna above the EBG substrate was found to reduce local SAR in a cubic head model by 84% as compared with that above a perfect electric conductor.
