Interpretation of Utterances based on Interactive Sequences -- Experimental Comparisons between 6-year-olds and adults --
Katsuhiko Ishikawa, Kazuhide Hashiya (Kyushu Uni.) HCS2011-43
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The meaning of an utterance can be conditioned not only with decoding process but also with pragmatic inference. Even when an utterance has ambiguous syntactic structure, adults in most cases infer the meaning of it with using the communicative context as a clue of the interpretation. However, the developmental process of such an inference is still unclear. The present study investigated in experimental setups whether 6-year-olds and adults consider the preceding communication as the clue of the interpretation of succeeding utterance. Experiments 1 and 2 revealed when the succeeding utterance was ambiguous message, adults weighted the role of preceding communication as the context on the interpretation but the children do not. But Experiments 3 and 4 revealed children considered the role of communication when succeeding utterance was unambiguous.
