MIMO Signal Detection Using Multi-Dimensional Search and Quantization by Lattice Reduction

(in English) For multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications, the optimal signal detection is the maximum likelihood detection (MLD). Unfortunately, the computational complexity of MLD is prohibitive when the modulation order and the number of transmit antennas are large. Thus, suboptimal signal detection algorithms that aim to reduce the complexity while keeping almost the same bit error rate (BER) as MLD have been studied. As such a suboptimal signal detection algorithm, multi-dimensional search (MDS) sets a minimum mean-square error (MMSE) detection result to a starting point, and searches for signal candidates in multi-dimensions of the noise enhancement from which the MMSE detection suffers. However, the BER of MDS degrades seriously under a highly spatially correlated MIMO channel condition. To alleviate such degradation, this report proposes a new algorithm that introduces quantization by lattice reduction (LR) into MDS. Computer simulations demonstrate that the proposed method can maintain excellent BER performance even over a highly spatially correlated MIMO channel.
