High Efficient Power Amplification of M-ary Modulated Signal by Spatial Superposition

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This paper presents a new spatial power combining technology suitable for superposed M-ary modulated communication system that can provide efficient use of the frequency resource and transmitted power. Employing M-ary modulation would be effective for broad-band transmission with a frequency-band-limited system. However, an M-ary modulation scheme, such as 16QAM or 64QAM is generally mush more vulnerable to nonlinear distortion from power devices than a conventional QPSK scheme because of large amplitude variation. We propose a new system that incorporates multiple OQPSK modulators and combines their output signals in a vector-sum manner in space to produce an M-ary signal. It was found from this study that the proposed system shows better performance than that of conventional system on the nonlinear transmission channel usually observed in such a power amplifier. This unique configuration enables the reliable transmission of higher data rates with efficient use of power and bandwidth.
