Investigation of Modal Dispersion Compensation Using Digital Coherent Receiver in Multi-mode Fiber Transmission

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Internet traffic is increasing rapidly, and considerable attention has been paid to the construction of high-speed networks. To realize a much higher transmission capacity, we need to avoid the nonlinear effects in optical fiber and the optical fiber fuse phenomenon. Enlarging the effective area (A_eff) of optical fibers is a practical way of reducing nonlinearity and increasing the fiber fuse threshold power. However, enlarging the A_eff makes it difficult to keep the single mode operation of the fiber at the signal wavelength. With multi-mode operation, mode dispersion causes serious signal degradation as a result of inter-symbol interference (ISI). Even if we can eliminate the higher-order mode by using a mode filter, multipath interference (MPI), which is caused by repeated mode conversion between fundamental and higher-order modes, cannot be removed with an optical method. If we can compensate for such signal degradation by mode dispersion, we can realize a much larger Aeff and expect to achieve a much higher transmission capacity. Here, we demonstrate the transmission of graded-index multi-mode fiber (GI-MMF) with MPI compensation using digital coherent technology.
