Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Channelrhodopsin-2, which is derived from the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, functions as a light-driven cation-selective channel. Because of its specific character, it is possible to make photo sensitive neurons by transfecting the ChR2 gene into neurons. Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is one of genetic diseases results in the death of rod photoreceptors followed by gradual death of the cones. The degeneration leads to blindness. Although photoreceptor cells are often degenerated in the eyes of RP patients, other retinal neurons, including retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), are preserved. Herein, we introduce the strategies for restoring vision by using channelrhodopsins.
