The Performance Evaluation of Traffic-Distributed Clustering with Transmission Power Control for Wireless Sensor Networks

(in English) In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), it is essential to save energy consumption at sensor nodes (SNs). Clustering is one of approaches to save energy consumption, where neighboring SNs form a cluster and transmit the sensing data to cluster heads (CHs), and then CHs send aggregated data to a sink node. Under spatial non-uniform traffic environments, the clustering causes the non-uniformity in energy consumption and data gathering performance between clusters. The authors have proposed the traffic-distributed clustering scheme which can absorb the spatial traffic non-uniformly by using cluster area control. However, the proposed scheme causes degradation of the data gathering performance at the cluster with the expanded area due to the large transmission distance. In this paper, we propose SN transmission power control for the proposed clustering scheme in WSNs employing IEEE802.15.4 beacon enabled mode. Our proposed scheme can prevent the degradation of the data gathering performance in the clusters with expanded area by the SN transmission power control. In addition, to reduce energy consumption the proposed scheme controls the active period length according to traffic conditions. The performance evaluations show that the proposed scheme achieves uniform and improved data gathering performance across the clusters and less energy consumption.
