Fiber-optic refractive index (RI) sensors have been extensively studied for chemical, engineering, and biomedical applications. Most of the conventional RI sensors, however, suffer from the following problems: (1) the sensing area is relatively large, i.e., the spatial resolution is not high, (2) the sensor head is not physically strong, (3) the system is complicated and expensive, and (4) only RI of liquids can be measured. In this paper, in order to resolve the problems above, we propose and demonstrate a novel fiber-optic RI sensor using dielectric multilayer thin films deposited on the optical fiber end surface. We experimentally show that the center frequency of the reflected light spectrum depends on the RI of the liquids and solids attached to the fiber end with a coefficient of +0.61 nm/RIU (refractive index unit). This result is in good agreement with our simulation result based on the characteristic-matrix method. We also discuss how we can improve the sensitivity and compensate the temperature effect for the practical applications. |
