| (in English) | In the present study we explore the psychological role of verbal/nonverbal fillers in awkward silence during conversations. A dyadic-conversation between two undergraduate males was videotaped. We extracted the three types of scenes of silence at non-smooth turn-takings from this dyadic-conversation, (1) silence with verbal fillers, (2) silence with verbal and nonverbal fillers and (3) silence with no filler, and made 15 video clips of these scenes. In the experiment, 10 university students were asked to rate impressions of each of 15 scenes from the aspects of nervousness, cohesiveness and activity. Results of subjective evaluation tests showed that the scenes of silence with verbal fillers tended to be rate more active than those with no filler. These results suggest that expressing verbal fillers in awkward silence have a role to maintain conversations. | |
