Computer aided diagnosis scheme for histological classification of breast mass on ultrasonic images

(in English) The purpose of this study is to develop a computer-aided diagnosis scheme for histological classifications of breast masses on ultrasonographic images in order to assist clinicians’ in determining a treatment plane as a “second opinion.” The mass region is then segmented by two steps. First, a Snakes technique is employed to extract roughly the mass region. Second, a region-growing technique is applied around the extracted mass region to segment the irregularity on the edge of the mass region. Nine objective features on the mass region are determined by taking into account image features that experienced clinicians commonly used for describing breast masses on ultrasonographic images. A Bays discriminant function with the nine objective features is employed for distinguishing among four different types of histological classifications on masses. Finally, the classification accuracies of this proposed method is evaluated by using 83 ultrasonographic images.
