Study of Transmission and Reception Cluster Size in Multi-User Distributed Antenna System

(in English) In wireless communications, a distributed antenna system (DAS) is a promising technique to increase the spectral efficiency. DAS consists of geographically distributed base station antennas, which enables to perform virtual MIMO transmission and gain macro-diversity efficiency. DAS has many degrees of freedom such as antenna selection, clustering of antennas, and transmission schemes, and therefore it is complicated to analyze. In this paper, the cluster size in DAS is considered to be similar to the radius of cells in cellular systems. The capacity of cellular systems mainly depends on two parameters, i.e., the radius of cells and the distance between neighboring cells that use the same channel. However, clustering of base station antennas as well as the parameters mentioned previously is important in DAS. Assuming that base station antennas are clustered on the basis of location, clustering in DAS is evaluated in term of area spectral efficiency by changing the three parameters, i.e., the cluster size for base station antennas, the cluster size for mobile stations, and the distance between neighboring clusters. The simulation results show that the cluster size for base station antennas and that for mobile stations have to be set differently.
