[Invited Talk] What was, is and will be Software Radio
Masaaki Katayama (Nagoya Univ.) SR2011-14
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Studies of Software Defined Radio (SDR) begun with the realization of Speakeasy, or a multi-band multi-mode transceiver that can be upgraded by software without hardware modification. After the spin-off of this military technology, many SDR systems have been developed. The digital realization of radio-frequency signal processing with general purpose PLD and CPU was one of the main topics of SDR at the beginning. Now majority of researchers are focusing on the new services realized by SDR technologies, rather than SDR hardware itself. Though the rapid development of devices, however, still many hardware issues remains, including amplitude nonlinearity and time imperfectness of A/D converters, lack of common open architectures, and difficulties on multi-signal processing. With SDR context, wireless systems can be described in highly abstracted manners, and the development of new wireless systems based on this abstraction is still needed. In addition, new applications such as environmental data gathering and wireless controls for smart-grids for example, require new concepts of wireless systems. Considering these backgrounds, this talk introduces old and still important technical issues by reviewing SDR development history and discusses new challenges for future SDR.
