Ca2+ imaging on horizontal signal propagation in the mouse primary visual cortex

(in English) We studied spatio-temporal properties of horizontal signal propagation in mouse primary visual cortex, V1, using Ca2+ imaging. The excitatory signals induced by electrical stimulation spread in a restricted area. The excitatory signal, however, spread horizontally over the entire V1 area, when the GABAergic inhibitory synapses were blocked by administration of BCC. The velocity of the spread was 1.11 ± 0.129 cm/s(N=3), which is much slower than the propagation of action potential along the axon. These observations suggested that pyramidal cells were widely coupled each other via short and long range excitatory horizontal connections across the functional columns and dynamical interactions between excitatory and inhibitory synapses plays a crucial role in formation of functional columns.
