A simulation study of visual perceptual learning with attentional signals

(in English) Our perceptual ability of arbitrary stimuli can be improved by continued training and exposures to the stimuli.
This experience dependent improvement is referred to as perceptual learning.
One characteristic feature of perceptual learning is task specificity, in which the learning occurs only on the task-related stimulus out of all presented stimuli.
It is thought that the task specificity is due to a top-down process driven by attention in the brain.
On the other hand, recent developments of measurement technologies have enabled us to observe experimentally neuronal changes during perceptual learning.
Nevertheless, there is still a missing link; no previous study has clarified the direct relationship between the attentional top-down process and the neuronal changes due to perceptual learning.
In order to elucidate this, in this study, we propose a neural network model which includes two layers corresponding to the primary visual cortex and the higher visual cortex with attentional effects.
Using this model, we show that neurons in the higher visual cortex change their responses to the stimuli, induced by attention controls, during perceptual learning.
A potential neural mechanism underlying the result is also discussed.
