An Analysis on the Perception of Pitch Level Changes for Japanese Words

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In order to successfully construct a system to recognize errors in pitch accent for Japanese language learners, we have studied the perception of pitch level changes at the mora level. For this we have conducted a quantitative analysis on this perception to determine what factors play a role in pitch level change perception. To do this we systematically manipulated the F0 contour for words and ran a perceptual experiment with speakers of Tokyo Japanese. We created six different sets to look at different factors and their affects on pitch perception: F0 trajectory, maximum and minimum F0 values, mora position, and syllable weight.
