Performance Evaluation of Rapid Retransmission Control for Data Centers

(in English) TCP is widely used as a reliable transport protocol. In TCP, various parameters are defined so that it can be used in wide-area networks. For example, the lower limit of RTO (Retransmission Time-Out) is set to a few hundred milliseconds. On the other hand, the data center networks are widerband and lower latency than conventional LAN/WAN environments, where the propagation delay between servers may be the order of microsecond. Therefore, RTO may lead to significant degradation of communication efficiency in such an environment. To address this problem, rapid data retransmission control method in layer 2, named R2D2 (Rapid and Reliable Data Delivery), has recently been proposed. R2D2 treats all of data flows from a source node as a single flow. Because of its simple mechanism, R2D2 seems to be used in high-speed networks. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of R2D2 by using simulations, and validate its effectiveness as a retransmission control mechanism for data centers.
