This paper reconfirms that talker identity can be transmitted even under the across-linguistic circumstances using a bilingual speech corpus. Human listeners were required to make talker discrimination in the ABX paradigm, where the stimuli A and B were utterances by different talkers in the same language (e.g., Japanese, or English) and the stimulus X was an utterance by either of A or B in the different language (e.g., English, or Japanese). The average hit rate of this discrimination task was as high as 89%. The mutual distance matrix was generated using the discrimination index (i.e., d’) on the basis of the theory of signal detection. By applying the multi-dimensional scaling technique, a three-dimensional perceptual space for talkers in the cross-lingual situation was estimated. The estimated dimensions were correlated to the average F0, average periodicity, and spectral centroid, respectively. |
