This paper presents a method for measuring the change in diameter of
a circular ring to which an external force is applied
from its diametrical direction, by the observing
Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) produced
in an optical fiber bonded to its surface.
The function that gives the BGS shape by
deformation from the diametrical force on the
circular ring is formulated based on
(i) the relationship between a non-uniform strain
distribution produced in the circular ring under
the diametrical force and the diameter change using
elastic analysis, (ii) the strain dependence of
the BGS frequency shift, and (iii) the BGS observation
position and section length.
The diameter change is obtained by minimizing
the residual error sum of squares between observed BGSs and
those calculated by the function.
Results from diameter change measurement experiments using
a circular ring with a diameter of ca. 2 m
confirmed that the observed BGS shape is in good agreement with that
calculated by the function.
The error for the diameter change measurement was less than 0.7 mm.
The rate of diameter change with applied force is assumed
to be low up to a diameter change of 1 \%, followed by a significant
increase above 1 \%, as previously reported.
Therefore, the measurement error in the range up to 1 \% diameter change
for a ca. 2m circular ring is 3.5 \%.
These results show the validity of the BGS shape analysis and
the effectiveness of this method. |
