Flow-Characteristics based Sleep Control on Wireless LAN Access Point

(in English) Radio-On-Demand network (ROD) is proposed for power saving in IEEE 802.11 wireless access points. Although the sleep mode in ROD system can drastically reduce the power consumption, it is likely to increase waiting time of applications as well. The authors propose a novel automatic sleep control scheme that achieves low power consumption while keeping short waiting time. In the scheme, flow is defined as series of packets of each application such as Web access and P2P communication, and whether the access point sleeps or continues to be active is decided based on the estimation of arrival time of the next flow considering the flow’s traffic characteristics. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
