Future wireless radio systems will support a flexible and more efficient use of wireless resources. Cognitive radio systems are at the cutting edge on the development of such flexible and intelligent radios which are able to detect free and unused frequency resources and usage patters to improve the transmission characteristics adaptively while reducing the mutual interference in the presence of coexisting wireless systems. It has been already argued that the implementation of such cognitive radio systems may suffer due to proprietary software designs and incompatible spectrum sensing hardware. The harmonization between multi-vendor cognitive radio systems and sensing hardware will increase the user acceptance of such systems and will reduce implementation costs significantly. The IEEE P1900.6 Working Group under the IEEE DYSPAN Standards Committee has started their activities to provide standardized interfaces between sensing devices, data archives and cognitive engines. In this study, the advantages of an IEEE P1900.6 compliant interface implementation will be discussed. A detailed implementation design will be presented which was used to build up an IEEE P1900.6 compliant cognitive radio platform prototype. |
