Japanese government has legislated in 2006 to place sightseeing as a basis of national prosperity. It has also set up the goal in increasing annual figure of sightseeing visitors from abroad to 10 million. A lot of sightseeing survey indicate that Hakodate is highly regarded as one of the most attractive cities to visit in Japan. Hokkaido municipal government data indicates that visitors to Hakodate from abroad, particularly from Asian countries, have been steadily increasing. In contrast to its popularity, the level of non-Japanese sightseeing information of Hakodate is still poor. This paper reports on an attempt to implement two Web-based multi-lingual Hakodate sightseeing information services. Japanese travel conversation phrase book and a popular Hakodate restaurant information Web site are machine-translated by Language Grid to Korean, Chinese (simplified and traditional characters) as well as to English, and provided as services on the Web. A preliminary evaluation of the system is also provided. |
