As 50-kg class small satellites can be launched as piggyback with the host satellite, the development cost can be reduced and it can be delivered shortly comparing with normal satellites. However, the onboard resources for small satellites are limited and then the RF communication capacity is also limited. The communication capacity can be improved by using optical communications. Optical communications are currently no restriction to the Radio Regulation and the launch schedule can be shortened by avoiding the international frequency management. The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) has begun the development of a Small Optical TrAnsponder (SOTA) on board a small satellite, which project is called the Space Optical Communications Research Advanced Technology Satellite (SOCRATES) project. This paper presents the experiment plan for SOCRATES. |
