[Invited Talk] Emerging self -- development of self-awareness and the mirror system --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Recent studies have suggested a developmental continuity from prenatal to postnatal sensorimotor activities. Even fetuses seem to have some knowledge of their own bodies; they manifest a sense of knowing that their bodies are entities, different from the other entities in the external environment. On the basis of such developmentally early forms of the self, humans perceive equivalence relations between their own and others’ actions from birth. By the end of the first year of life, infants understand the actions of others in a way that is indicative of an internalization of their own perceptual experience. Here, we discuss the development of self-awareness in relation to the function of the mirror system.
