Experimental study on formation of symbolic communication systems in coordination task

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In order to study the process and the mechanism of establishment of communication through interactions, we conducted an experiment of formation of communication systems. In the experiment, participants try to solve a coordinate task through transmission and reception of messages composed of small number of abstract figures. We observed that the participants came to solve the coordination task by forming communication systems from the initial state without any rule about symbol usage. It is suggested from the analysis of the formation processes that the communication system is formed through the mutual scaffolding process between rules of symbol usage and some pragmatics which are not represented in the rule.
