We describe a free-space 128 x 128 port optical switching module that uses micro-electro mechanical systems (MEMS)-based beam-steering mirrors. The module has a Z-layout optical configuration with a pair of optical collimator arrays as the optical I/O ports and a pair of MEMS mirror arrays as the switching elements. The collimator array has a high pointing accuracy, within 0.065 degree, which decreases clipping loss at each MEMS mirror. The results for optical path connections of our switch module show good optical performance, including maximum insertion loss of 2.0 dB, maximum wavelength dependent loss of 0.5 dB, and maximum polarization dependent loss of 0.2 dB. |
