Experimental evaluation as the random cipher of the Yuen-2000 (Y-00) protocol

(in English) The personal information and proprietary information in various network applications are transmitted in the current networks. Accordingly, attention to the security of the network is increased. The use of the encryption is desirable for a construction of the highly secure network. The quantum stream cipher by Yuen 2000 protocol (Y-00) has a possibility that realizes the unbreakable security level, and features high compatibility with the current optical fiber communication systems. So far, the authors evaluated experimentally Y-00 performance in terms of the optical fiber communication system and demonstrated Y-00 transmission experiments at the data rate over giga-bit per second in long distance optical fiber transmission lines. Moreover, a prototype of Y-00 was developed which was successfully applied to the experimental test in the in-service GbE network of Tamagawa University. According to the theoretical research results, random cipher nature is one of the significant parameters for evaluating the security level of Y-00. In this report, for achieving the experimental investigation of the random cipher nature, an experiment is conducted in which the intensity-modulated Y-00 signals are detected for a eavesdropper by the direct-detection scheme. Owing to the random cipher nature, it is demonstrated an eavesdropper is not able to measure the correct level of Y-00 signals by the direct detection scheme.
