Optical reflectometry is a technique for distributed measurements which gives the profile of reflections and backscattering as a function of position along optical waveguides. Specifically, optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) is a technique of high spatial resolution and high sensitivity. The accuracy of OFDR is decreased by coherent fading noise which can be reduced by the frequency shift averaging method. In this report, we propose a high accuracy OFDR using an optical frequency comb and a variable optical delay line as a countermeasure for fading noise. This scheme corresponds to a frequency shift averaging of the number of the teeth of the optical frequency comb. Using this scheme combining with conventional frequency shift averaging, we showed better experimental result in terms of accuracy with optical frequency comb than single wavelength laser. |
