To assist blind persons' mobility, we are developing a tactile map automated creation system. By using tactile maps created with this system, we conducted a walking experiment with two blind participants. It was proven that they were able to reach new places without a guide. An analysis of the protocols and videos during walking showed the mechanism of mistaking parking lots for crossings and mistaking crossings for entrances of a building or a park, and the effectiveness of gas stations and restaurants as landmarks. Based on these analysis, we concluded necessary improvement of the tactile map automated creation system, importance of using both tactile and audio maps, and necessity of developing a database for blind travelers. |
