Study of 2-step QRM-ML Block Signal Detection using Adaptive Tree Structure Simplification for Single-Carrier Transmission

(in English) A maximum likelihood block signal detection employing QR decomposition and M-algorithm (QRM-MLBD) can significantly improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of single-carrier (SC) transmission compared to the minimum mean square error frequency-domain equalization (MMSE-FDE) in frequency-selective channel. However, the computational complexity of QRM-MLBD is still much higher than that of MMSE-FDE. Recently, we proposed a 2-step QRM-MLBD which simplifies the tree structure of MLD utilizing the hard detection results obtained by MMSE-FDE to reduce the computational complexity of QRM-MLBD. In this paper, we propose an adaptive tree-pruning 2-step QRM-MLBD based on the soft detection results and variance of residual inter-symbol interference (ISI) plus noise after MMSE-FDE for 2-step QRM-MLBD. We evaluate, by computer simulation, the BER performance and computational complexity and show that it can reduce the computational complexity while keeping almost the same BER performance as the conventional QRM-MLBD and 2-step QRM-MLBD based on the hard decision.
