Measurement of high-birefringence section for terrestrial optical link length using PNC-OFDR

(in English) For installed optical fiber cables, there exist a lot of such cases: if one part of section has high polarization mode dispersion (PMD), the total PMD becomes very high. If we can find the high PMD sections, by replacing them to low PMD cables, we may reduce the total PMD. To replace the bad sections of a link with high PMD, distributed measurement technique is highly required. We developed a full polarimetric reflectometry with a spatial resolution of 5 cm over 40 km based on phase-noise-compensated optical frequency domain reflectometry (PNC-OFDR), with a polarization diversity detection scheme. The distributed DGD measurement of high PMD fibers is realized using this technology, and the detection of ~ 1 ps/rkm fibers is successfully demonstrated based on it.
