[Invited Talk] RareJob: Using skype to teach English
Gaku Nakamura (RareJob Inc.) IN2010-88 MoMuC2010-47
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) RareJob was established in 2007 based on the idea of using Skype to create unique job opportunities linking Japan with other countries around the world. The service which RareJob offers is teaching English as a second language, or ESL, employing tutors from the Philippines. If a student does a 25-minute lesson everyday, that's 129yen per lesson, about 40 times less than what the same student would pay for one-on-one lessons in a classroom. All of the tutors are students or graduates of the University of the Philippines which is the best University in the Philippines. RareJob uses skype for tutorial, so students could study at their home or outside using PC or mobile devices. As of 2010 October, with an average of more than 5,000 ESL lessons per day and 1,700 registered tutors, RareJob is Japan's largest independent provider of online ESL instruction.
We presented opportunities in acquiring English skills efficiently by reducing the costs of its learning, which means that every Japanese would be able to communicate in English as they will. Thus, couple of years from now, Japanese-English communication skills will improve resulting to the increase in international competitiveness of Japanese companies. RareJob opened lots of doors for its Filipino employees. Over the past years, they haven't been able to utilize their abilities due to lack of resources. And that is what RareJob has provided them: an opportunity to utilize their English knowledge through skype. With this innovative business approach, we will change Japan, and at the same time, Philippines.
