Study of OFDM Transmission System with Adaptive Guard Interval Control Method

(in English) OFDM technique has been received considerable attentions in the wireless communications systems by its robustness against multipath fading channel. In the OFDM system, Guard Interval (GI) is inserted between symbols to avoid inter-symbol interference (ISI) caused by multipath fading channel. While the length of GI is longer than channel delay spread, it can protect received signal from inter-symbol interference. However, the transmission efficiency would degrade when GI is taken by unnecessary length with longer than the channel delay spread. This paper proposes an adaptive GI control method, which can achieve the better transmission efficiency without degradation of BER performance. The salient feature of proposed method is to decide the optimum GI length for the data symbols from the channel impulse response estimated by the maximum likelihood (ML) method in adaptation to the conditions of multipath fading channel. This paper presents the various computer simulation results to verify the effectiveness of proposed method.
