Physical characteristics of earplug speakers for reciprocal head-related transfer function measurement

(in English) Head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) can be measured in short time with reciprocal method. In the reciprocal HRTF measurement, an earplug speaker, which is a very small speaker embedded in an earplug made of silicon-based impression material, is necessary. We investigated physical characteristics of three small speakers (DTEC-30008, ED-29689 and SR6438NWS, Knowles Electronics) for the earplug speaker. DTEC-30008 produces the highest overall output sound pressure level among the three speakers. When the distance between the speaker and a microphone is 0.2 m, SNR is above 0 dB for the frequency range between 120 Hz to 20 kHz. ED-29689 and SNR6438NWS produce lower sound pressure level than DTEC-30008, and the SNR of these speakers is below 0d below 300 Hz. All speakers are omnidirectional below 10 kHz. DTEC-30008, however, has a strong directivity above 12 kHz due to directional changes of the notch frequency and depth. Other two speakers are modestly omnidirectional above 10 kHz. In order to avoid the harmonic distortion production, input signal level to the small speaker has to be less than 0.5 V for DTEC-30008 and SR6438NWS, and less than 0.2 V for ED-29689. DTEC-30008, ED-29689 and SR6438NWS can be used to measure near-field HRTFs between 0.2 to 12 kHz, 0.3 to 18 kHz, and 0.4 to 20 kHz, respectively.
