本研究では乳児を対象とした質感にかかわる実験を概論する.一つ目は,光沢感への選好を選好注視法により検討した研究である(Yang et al, submitted).生後7-8ヶ月の乳児は,マットな対象よりも光沢のある対象を選好し,同じ輝度ヒストグラムにある光沢のある対象とテクスチャの着いた対象を区別し,異なるヒストグラムにあるにもかかわらずマットな対象とテクスチャのある対象とを区別しなかった.これらの実験結果から生後7-8ヶ月児は,光沢の表象をもとに対象を区別することが示唆される.二番目は”transfer-across-depth-cue”を用いた一連の研究を紹介する(Tsuruhara et al, 2009, 2010). これは,様々な奥行き手がかりがもつ,物体表面のテクスチャ情報の違いを越えて、物体の形状を表象できるかを問う実験タスクである.この手法を使った実験から,生後7-8ヶ月児でshading とsurface counterとline-junctionの間で,手がかりの違いを越えた奥行きに基づく物体認識が可能であることが示されている. |

In this study I will present two different infants’ studies. First is glossiness perception in infants by using preferential looking paradigm (Yang et al, submitted). Their first experiment showed that the 7-8-month-olds, but not the 5-6 month-olds, significantly looked longer at the glossy object to the matte object. Their second experiment showed that the 7-8-month-old infants could discriminate between the glossy object and the textured object even though both had similar luminance histograms. On the other hand, the infants showed no discriminate for the textured object over the matte object even though they had largely different histograms. These findings suggest that 7-8-month-old infants perceive difference between glossy objects and matte objects on the basis of surface representations. Second is to explore the ability to generate spatial representations of an object as specified by static-pictorial depth cues by using a "transfer-across-depth-cues" method (Tsuruhara et al, 2009, 2010). Infants were habituated to an object with depth specified by one cue and then presented with the same shape with depth specified by a different cue. Only if an abstract representation of that object had been formed, could transfer across cues occur. Six- to seven-month-old infants showed significant evidence of transfer from shading to surface contours and from shading to line-junctions, while four- to five-month-olds did not. This work supports the hypothesis that the ability to form 3D spatial representations from pictorial depth cues develops at about six months of age. |
