Size distortion of objects in apparent motion
Takahiro Kawabe (Kyushu Univ.) HIP2010-55
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This study investigated how prior and posterior motion direction affected the percept of an object’s size. Observers were exposed repetitions of a two-stroke apparent motion in which a vertical bar as an inducer was presented in the first frame for 100 ms and successively two vertical bars as test bars were presented in the second frame for 100 ms so as to invoke a split-fusion apparent motion. The observers were asked to judge which of test bars or comparison bars (i.e. without the first frame) were shorter. The length of comparison bars was controlled by following a randomly-interleaved staircase method. The results showed that points of subjective equality of test bars in the condition with the inducer shorter than test bars were significantly smaller than those in the condition with inducer as short as test bars. The size distortion was significantly reduced when luminance polarity of the inducer was reversed and when the inducer and test bars were simultaneously presented. Moreover, the size distortion was observed until the duration of the inducer and test bars exceeded 300 ms. These results suggest that posterior motion direction is predominantly employed to determine perceptual size of an object in apparent motion when prior and posterior motion signed opposite directions.
