We have developed three types of super-resolution methods, which commonly restore degraded images by image reconstruction. The image reconstruction is formulated as an energy minimization problem, where a restored image is obtained as an image that minimizes an energy function based on image degradation process. Specifically, it is MAP (maximum a posteriori) estimation since the energy function is a weighted sum of the error term and the regularization term.
In this presentation, we present three types of super-resolution methods: single-frame SR, multi-frame SR and SR specifically designed for two-dimensional code. The multi-frame super-resolution restores detail structures by making use of the fact that sampling positions in each image is slightly different from others. It is important to speed up the process because precise registration of sub-pixel accuracy is necessary for each moving region. Although multi-frame super-resolution is very effective for a system such as video archives, where off-line processing is allowed, it is not suitable for processing high definition videos in real time. To meet this end, we have also developed a single-frame super-resolution method, and commercialized it as a custom LSI that can achieve real-time super-resolution of the high definition video. Also, in an attempt to significantly improve performance by focusing on a specific target, we have developed a super-resolution method that is specifically designed for QR-code, which is one of the most popular two-dimensional codes. |
