Performance Evaluation of the SIMD/MIMD Dynamic Mode Switching Processor IMAPCAR2

is a kind of processor designed to be able to outperform existing DSPs
against image recognition tasks, by capturing the processing feature of
major image processing and image recognition tasks. The authors have developed a highly parallel processor calls IMAPCAR2, which can dynamically switch itself between SIMD and MIMD operation modes, so that the SIMD and MIMD parallelism existing in most image recognition tasks can be fully exploited. In this paper, first the hardware and software structure of IMAPCAR2 is described. Then, design features of both operation modes are presented and their contributions to performance improvement are measured using real machine. Finally, ways to choose between the two operation modes are also studied.
